The Former President's Woke Warning Misses The Continent's True Danger: Technological Decline.

Donald Trump's national security strategy offers a flawed view of the European Union. It claims that unrestrained immigration and so-called "progressive" policies pose an existential threat to the continent's identity. However, this perspective rests on a serious misinterpretation of the reality. The true danger confronting the EU is not cultural but economic and technological lag.

The Stark Growth Divide Separating the US and Europe

The data reveal a stark picture. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by eighty-seven percent, while a paltry 13.5% increase for the EU. During this period, EU GDP per capita fell from 76.5% to just 50% of the US level. Remarkably, even Mississippi now boasts a greater average income than several leading EU nations like Italy and France.

Today, roughly half of the global top fifty technology firms are US-based, while only four are European.

The Innovation Deficit: A Critical Problem

This widening disparity is driven by stronger efficiency gains in the US, largely due to breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The scene of world technology leadership is decidedly American. Over the past five decades, hundreds of American startups have scaled into companies valued at over $10bn, compared with only fourteen in Europe.

This disparity raises a vital issue: In the race for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, what is the EU positioned? Most analysts agree it is essentially a contest between two between the US and China, with Europe starting at a clear handicap.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Technological Lag

Several major reasons explain this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a far deeper and more dynamic network for financing new ventures. Europe has yet to establish a genuine unified investment market, which caps the scale of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented regulation hamper Europe. A US startup can introduce a service under one set of laws to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a larger population size, is split among 27 different national regimes, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward risk-taking vary greatly. In parts of Europe, business failure was once viewed with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has eroded its capacity for pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these hurdles, one can find reasons for optimism. European leaders are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have begun to advance substantial change. Notable reports on European competitiveness and the single market highlight the need for major reforms.

Given appropriate policies and regulatory reforms, these assets might enable much higher degrees of commercial innovation.

The continent retains significant strengths: high-quality workforce, top-tier schools and universities, and premier labs. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these elements could trigger a surge of venture creation.

Importantly, even if Europe does not become the leader in creating next-generation tech, it can still significantly increase economic output by implementing and tailoring advancements from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now stands at a decisive crossroads. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, Europe's technological decline has been steady. But, without bold steps to address its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could turn into a rapid and permanent loss of world influence.
